When you part from this world, you hope that the body you’re leaving behind is treated with respect. Most of us expect ourselves to be buried or cremated in some form or another where our bodies can be laid to rest with dignity. The last thing you want is for your body to be carelessly dumped on the side of the road as if it were a bag of garbage.
If those are your wishes, then you probably wouldn’t want Tanya Albrecht, 28, or Adam Crow, 27, to be responsible for arranging your funeral. On May 19, 2017, at about 5:30 am, an SUV being used as an unmarked hearse carrying a body was stolen while the driver stopped at a McDonald’s in Bryan, Texas.
The unidentified body was being driven from the coroner’s office to the funeral home. But instead of being prepared for burial, Albrecht and Crow tossed the body in the first rural roadside ditch they could find.
Of course, when you steal a car and find a dead body in the back, what else are you going to do? A smart criminal would move onto another vehicle and save them the trouble of, you know, dealing with a corpse. But for Albrecht and Crow, there clearly wasn’t enough time to search for another vehicle to steal. They needed this hearse. Now.
Or maybe they didn’t notice the body until it was too late. They could have been surging with “adrenaline” in the moments they were breaking into the unmarked hearse. It was, of course, an SUV, not a regular hearse. If they had seen a regular hearse, perhaps they wouldn’t have stolen it.
Unfortunately, Albrecht and Crow’s motives are unknown.
The body was found just 90 minutes after the theft, still strapped to the gurney. Chief Deputy Jim Stewart of the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office tweeted: “True story…hearse stolen in Bryan with body inside, then body dumped in the county!”
Around noon that day, Albrecht and Crow were pulled over in the stolen hearse and arrested. They have both been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and the abuse of a corpse. This is Albrecht’s second arrest, but Crow is quite familiar with the inside of a jail cell.
After this Friday’s “shenanigans” they could be spending quite a few years in jail.
