Having a baby should be one of the most joyous times in someone’s life. Family and friends often gather together to celebrate this new life and to welcome the newest member of the family. Just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio a group of people gathered to do just that. It was shortly before midnight when the gender of the expectant mother’s baby was revealed to be a boy, but that joy quickly shifted to terror when two gunmen opened fire at the party.
Killed during the gunfire was 22-year-old Autumn Garrett of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In addition to Garrett, nine other party-goers were wounded, including three children between the ages of 2 and 8-years-old.
Several people were able to dial 911 as the shooting occurred. CNN, who was able to obtain a copy of a witness’ 911 call, reports, “There’s a whole lot of people here are shot,” the witness told the operator, as people scream in the background. “I just seen two people walk by, I looked outside, next thing I know they just ran in and just start shooting,” the man states before telling the operator that he had also been shot.
Neighbors were also able to confirm to 911 operators that a number of people, including children and a pregnant woman were inside the home as the shooting occurred. The gunmen managed to escape before police and emergency medical services arrived on the scene.
The Washington Post reports that the following day a reporter was able to catch up with the mother-to-be who had been the party’s guest of honor. She had been shot in the leg during the attack and ultimately lost the baby the group had been celebrating.
Police are currently investigating the identities of the two gunmen. Witnesses were able to provide a good description of the suspects’ vehicle but have not yet revealed any more information as the investigation unfolds.
