By day, 42-year-old Kat West lived as an average stay-at-home mom, but those who knew Kat would say she was anything but an average housewife. Starting her own subscription site, West pulled in extra money posing for provocative photos online under the moniker Kitty Kat West. From the comfort of the Marilyn Monroe look-alike’s suburban Calera, Alabama home, which she shared with her 12-year-old daughter and husband William Jeffrey West, Kat routinely shared photos of herself sporting lingerie and skimpy outfits, alongside family photos. While West knew about Kat’s online activities and according to some accounts even reveled in his wife’s sexpot persona, there are those who believe it may have been the motive behind the mom’s murder.
It was near 5 am on the morning of January 13, 2018, when a neighbor of the Wests found Kat’s body sprawled in a pool of blood near her home. Next to her partially clad body laid her phone, along with a bottle of absinthe. According to her husband, Kat’s death was nothing but a tragic, alcohol-fueled accident, however, authorities suspected foul play.
Inside Edition was able to obtain footage of the couple on the night before Kat’s death, where the couple is seen purchasing the same bottle of absinthe Kat’s body was found with, along with a bottle of Jameson whiskey from a neighborhood liquor store. The footage showed the couple in good spirits, with West giving Kat a playful pat on the rear before exiting the store.
Police suspect that between the time the couple had left the liquor store and the discovery of Kat’s body the following morning there had been a domestic dispute between the couple. Authorities say West showed little signs of emotion when he was informed that his wife’s body had been found, extinguishing a cigarette before walking back inside the suburban home the family shared. A coroner later determined Kat’s official cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Ruling her death suspicious, authorities immediately keyed in on West as the suspect behind his wife’s murder. Spending weeks collecting necessary evidence, investigators placed West under arrest on February 22 after receiving a copy of Kat West’s final autopsy report.
“We know what happened that night and we do have evidence to support that, but providing that evidence may hinder the prosecution process,” Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley said during a press conference.
Cheif Lemley also stated that authorities are not completely sure about how comfortable William West was with his wife’s online activities and suspect that an argument about Kat’s provocative photos may have escalated into an incident of domestic violence.
William Jeffrey West is currently being held in Shelby County Jail in connection to Kat West’s murder. His bond has been set at $500,000.
