We all know the names of serial killers like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and David Berkowitz. While their crimes were heinous enough to shock the nation, what many may be shocked to learn is that some of the worst serial killers of all time are names no one’s ever heard of.

Daniel Camargo Barbosa

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Daniel Camargo-Barbosa was a serial killer from Colombia who was believed to have raped and murdered over 150 young girls throughout Colombia and Ecuador. Like Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo, Camargo-Barbosa enjoyed engaging in sexual acts with virgins. When he discovered that the woman he was planning to marry, Esperanza, was not a virgin, he forced her to help him procure young girls whom he could rape. Camargo-Barbosa was convicted in Colombia in 1989. He was murdered in prison in 1994 by another inmate.

Kampatimar Shankariya

The reason some of the world’s worst serial killers are not household names is because some countries are less than willing to release court information to the public. This is the case when it comes to Kampatimar Shankariya. Shankariya killed 70 people with a hammer for the thrill of it between 1977 and 1978. He was put to death in Jaipur, India in 1979. Just before the hangman pulled the hatch, Shankariya’s final statement was, “I have murdered in vain, nobody should become like me.”

Yang Xinhai

Also known as “the Monster Killer,” Yang Xinhai was convicted and sentenced to death for killing 65 people between 1968 and 1994. When police picked him up for creeping around an entertainment venue in 2003 they discovered that Xinhai was wanted for murder in 4 separate Chinese provinces. Shortly after his arrest, Xinhai confessed to 65 murders, 23 rapes and a handful of serious attacks. It was also learned that Xinhai had contracted HIV from one of his victims. He was put to death in 2004.

Abul Djabar

Abul Djabar was a serial killer from Afghanistan during the 1970s. He was charged with the rape and murder of 65 men and boys by wrapping a turban around their neck and strangling them to death while sodomizing them. Though he was charged for the deaths of 65 people, it’s believed that his death toll may have been closer to 300. He was executed on October 21, 1970.

Andrei Chikatilo

Dubbed by media as “Butcher of Rostov” and “The Red Ripper,” Andrei Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer who raped, murdered and mutilated at least 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990. He confessed to 56 murders in total, but was only tried for 53 of them. He was executed in February of 1994.
