Police in south-east Russia have arrested a couple who they believe may have killed and eaten as many as 30 people.

35-year-old Dmitry Baksheev and his wife, 42-year-old Natalia Baksheev, became the focus of a murder investigation when a lost phone showing Dmitry posing with a mutilated female corpse was recovered. The phone, which was found on the streets of Krasnodar, also featured photos of dismembered bodies.

The woman’s remains were later found in a duffle bag at the Military Aviation Academy, owned by Russia’s Department of Defense, where the couple lived and had worked as support staff, the BBC reports.

When police questioned Baksheev, he initially denied having any knowledge of the woman’s murder. It wouldn’t be until later that he admitted to killing both the woman photographed, as well as a second victim in 2012. Baksheev’s wife told police that her husband had been killing and cannibalizing people since as early as 1999 and may have had as many as 30 victims.

A search of the couple’s home revealed a real house of horrors. Additional photos of a head being served as a Christmas dinner and mutilated corpses, along with a series of movies titled “video lessons for cannibals,” 19 pieces of flayed human skin, and unknown jarred and frozen meat products which are now being tested to determine if they are of human origin were among some of the items recovered from the scene.

The couple is currently being held in Krasnodar as police continue to investigate and attempt to identify other possible victims.
